Legendary Petrikov was founded in the X century by prince of Yatvyaghi Peter. It was known since the XV century as a borough in the Great Duchy of Lithuania.

Nowadays Petrikov is an administrative, economical and cultural center of Petrikov district. Its population is 11 000.

The district is known by its legendary hero, participant of the Civil War and the World War II, Ded (Grandfather) Talash, in the honour of whom a monument was erected in the town. Six orthodox churches are active in the district; the Svyato-Nikolaevskaya and the Svyato-Voznesen-skaya churches are situated in Petrikov.
