Zhitkovichi was a village in the principality of Slutsk, Novogrudok province, in the Great Duchy of Lithuania. In consequence of the 2nd division of Rech Pospolita it became a part of Russian Empire.

Since October 1971 Zhitkovichi is a town; it is an administrative, economical and cultural center of Zhitkovichi district. The National Park "Pripyatsky", a part of the state botanical reserve "Lower Sluch", Zhitkovichi and Leninsky game-preserves, Zhitkovichi botanical reserve of herbs, the nature monument "Plantations of azalea" are situated on the territory of the district.

The lakes Chervonoye (the largest lake in Gomel province; its area is 43,6 square km) and Beloye (15,6 square km) are the pearls of Polesye.
